Traditional Knowledge Recording Workshop - the Great Sandy Biosphere, Australia
The Ancestors of Indigenous Australians have been living in the Great Sandy area for more than 5000 years. Their long history with the land has enabled them to build up an impressive depth of knowledge on how to live sustainably from resources from the land and sea. Sadly, this understanding of the natural world is being lost with the passing of elders. The Great Sandy and its diverse wildlife needs protection but that requires local involvement long into the future. Fauna & Flora International and our partner the Burnett Mary Regional Group (BMRG) recently organised an intensive five-day workshop for 10 participants aged eight to 75. Younger people filmed their Elders speaking about Traditional Knowledge in natural resource management and became more inspired as a result. This film presents the many outcomes of the Traditional Knowledge Recording Workshop process designed by Goorie Vision in association with Source Media for the Burnett Mary Regional group for Natural Resource Management Inc. This particular workshop held in Hervey Bay with the Butchulla community was an Initiative of the Great Sandy Biosphere partnership between FFI and BMRG. 1. LEARN all you can. Read, surf the web and experience the ocean directly. 2. Be a SMART SHOPPER. Ask grocery stores and restaurants about the source of their seafood. 3. CONSERVE water. Be careful when washing your car or watering your lawn. 4. REDUCE household pollutants. Cut down and properly dispose of herbicides, pesticides and cleaning products. 5. REDUCE waste. Dispose of trash properly. Where possible, recycle, re-use, and compost. 6. REDUCE automobile pollution. Use fuel efficient vehicles or carpool. Recycle motor oil and repair oil and air conditioning leaks. 7. PROTECT ocean wildlife. Don't dispose of fishing lines, nets, or plastic items in or near the water. 8. BE CONSIDERATE of sea-life habitats. Don't bother sea birds, mammals, and turtles or their nesting grounds. Support marine protected areas. 9. GET INVOLVED. Take part in a beach cleanup or other ocean-related activities. 10. CARE! PASS ON YOUR KNOWLEDGE! So, this year, we were studying on ecosystems. My partner Matthew, and I were researching on the ocean. We realized that the ocean is filled with plastics and garbage and recently, there has been an oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Just in time for World Oceans Day, a sweet video of Kaladi as she's cared for by Tim Lebling! A couple taking a beach stroll on Kodiak Island played a key role in saving a small treasure they discovered on the shores of Mayflower Cove this week. A very young sea otter pup had lost its mother and was on the beach alone. The couple contacted the US Fish and Wildlife Service's Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge, who notified the Alaska SeaLife Center in Seward. A local veterinarian assisted in evaluating and stabilizing the female pup by giving her fluids while transportation was arranged. "We appreciate the help provided by Tonya Lee of the USFWS and Dr. Angie Johnson of the Kodiak Veterinary Clinic," says Brett Long, husbandry director at the Alaska SeaLife Center. "Fortunately, the pup was found and taken care of by the right people." Era Aviation donated a flight to Anchorage, where a veterinary team from the ASLC performed a basic exam and found the pup was in good condition. They administered additional fluids and encouraged her to nurse from a bottle during the drive to Seward. Staff members named her "Kaladi" in keeping with this year's theme of caffeine-related products. "Kaladi weighed less than three pounds when admitted, so she was probably under two days old," says Tim Lebling, the Alaska SeaLife Center's stranding coordinator.
