The CI-field as an Open Space

What was most inspiring for me in our transatlantic CI meeting was a much deeper understanding - with mind and body - of what is "the CI-field".
For me it is not the sum of the individuals; it is not the 3 concentric circles as described by Tom; it is not even the connections between het conversations as we talked about it in our closing session; but for me the CI-field is the process of an ever-growing and ever-expanding Coll.Intelligence, through the individuals, through the connnections, through the ftf and online meetings, through...

The larger process and its purpose

Tom wrote in an email:

I do agree.

> We are part of a process that wants to happen, as are Devon and the ESes.

Probably. Letís take a closer look at what that may mean.

The unity of external and internal purpose

Tom wrote:

The purpose of our coming gathering Sept 1 is plan how to convene -- before the end of 2006 -- diverse scholars, practitioners, advocates, and others involved in the emerging field of collective intelligence and wisdom (CI/W, broadly defined).

The purpose of that conference (and subsequent similar gatherings) is to enable these leaders to discover each other's work and produce together common (or synergistic) understandings of the full spectrum of CI/W dynamics and possibilities -- including especially their/our realization of the movement they/we comprise -- and to create common projects together.

If we agree on the above as the purpose of the conference we want to convene (as I suggest we do), then what would it take to do a good job at enabling those leaders, including ourselves, to discover each other's work and produce together common (or synergistic) understandings of the full spectrum of CI/W dynamics and possibilities -- including especially their/our realization of the movement they/we comprise?

Since Tom has published in the Blog of CI his mini-essays on the forms, levels/realms, and fields of collective intelligence, I knew that it will take more than my mind alone to envision the full potential of the unfolding spectrum of CI/W dynamics and possibilities that he is sensing. Hence my questions:

Internal and external purpose

The purpose that Tom drafted is very clearly stated and expresssing well what has been motivating me too from the beginning of our conversations about the gathering of CI practitioners. I also liked the staggered, 3-stage way of describing the suggested purpose (primarily from an "external" perspective):

1. What our meeting can accomplish in relation to the larger gathering that we seek to call into being.

2. What that gathering can accomplish for its participant.

3. What that accomplishment can create for the world.

That triplet describes well an aspect of the value that our coming together can, ultimately, create for society. I say "an aspect" because there might be other ones emerging, too, unexpected results on the horizon, which are attractive enough for all of us to include in the results of our work/play that we want to realize.

Let's take to the heart the wise words from Ria:

"We need to be open to what wants to emerge. I don't mean to start from scratch (again). There is a clear purpose as set by Tom and Duri one year ago. But there is a reason that the 5 of us (+???) meet now; the unique blending of our talents and competences can and will reveal new insights and new opportunities.

I borrowed the question: "Now that we have met, what is our Work?" form Toke Moeller, and I keep it always in the back of my mind. It is an opening to the evolutionary impulse that "needs us, humans, to... ". Our being together can create a bigger, newer, innovative dynamic, where more collective intelligence and wisdom becomes possible.

from Michelle:

I see us dancing a dynamic dance of balance between, on the one hand, keeping our compass needle pointed to the North Star of our clear intention to convene the larger CI tribes and field for the purposes we've stated, while also tuning to and reading the unexpected guidance of the changing winds and tides of emergent wisdom - and helping each other stay on track and navigate true to both of these complementary realities.

and from Joel:

I sense that "our Work" in the days to come has to do both with
1- what wants to emerge
2- our intentions and stated visions
and that it's a very rich, dynamic, disciplined perhaps and mysteriouis blend of these both.

The quality of our already paying attention to that balance is delicious. It is inspiring me to see the possibility of a tele-Presencing session, maybe on Thursday.

As a footnote to the title of this entry, you will find below some words on the paired distinctions of internal/external purpose.

Draft purpose (to get us started)

The purpose of our coming gathering Sept 1 is plan how to convene -- before the end of 2006 -- diverse scholars, practitioners, advocates, and others involved in the emerging field of collective intelligence and wisdom (CI/W, broadly defined).

The purpose of that conference (and subsequent similar gatherings) is to enable these leaders to discover each other's work and produce together common (or synergistic) understandings of the full spectrum of CI/W dynamics and possibilities -- including especially their/our realization of the movement they/we comprise -- and to create common projects together.

The purpose of that discovery and co-creation is to enable them/us to enable our movement and societies to generate enough CI/W to translate our growing crises into a positive evolutionary leap for humankind.

The second invitation

The group that came together in response to our first invitation crafted a second, more elaborate invitation, on January 2nd, 2005, calling for a face-to-face meeting of the conveners group. We have not managed to arrange the timing and logistics of that meeting. However, most of the elements of that second invitation is still valid. See full text below.
